On farms and holiday homes in the countryside it is rather common to have just a septic tank to handle both the “grey” (washing) and “black” water (toilets). So when the tank is full you have to call a truck to come over and pump the stuff out and, hopefully, bring it to the municipal foul water treatment plant.

But there are many more environmentally friendly solutions available for people who really want to live off the grid and be independent of paying trucks and maintaining tanks.

The Swedish company Aquatron offers a system, which is based on separating the grey and black water at the source, so the grey water from washbasins and showers goes into separate tubes and is passed through a settling tank and then into a infiltration bed. From there it can be used directly for watering. The black water from the toilets goes into a separator that, by the sole use of centrifugal source and gravity, automatically separates the solids from the liquids, and the solids fall into a composting bio-chamber and in a short time is turned into good and nutrient topsoil. The separated liquids are then connected to the same infiltration system as the grey water.

So you get a maintenance-free  autonomous system, which produces topsoil. Another good thing is that you can use any standard flush toilet of your like, avoiding solutions that rely on specially made toilets that might not look that nice in your bathroom.
