WOOE 2019

Last week I went to the World Olive Oil Exhibition in Madrid, mainly because I was curious to see how different producers use their branding to stand out against each other. And, yes, there are really an amazing variety of bottle types, labels and neck tags in a great race to capture the buyer’s attention and convey a unique message to the market. Bottles go from totally transparent to opaque, in all forms and sizes and there is an excel in graphic design to go with them.

And still it seems to me that there are so many restrictions on the marketing communication related to olive oil compared to products like for example wine. On wine bottles it seems you can find any kind of opinion about the characteristics of the wine, like the taste and smell but also all sorts of other message like the other day I saw a wine bottle, seeking a revival for selling wines in bulk, stating that “organic wine is sexy” and the label was exclaiming: “organic & orgasmic”!

Not that I was very convinced by this message, not by the wine quality either, but I asked myself: how come all olive oil bottles have more or less the same information?

Well, being a (supposedly) totally natural and unaltered product, you could say that the best olive oils are just pure olive juice. To be considered an “extra virgin” olive oil, the highest class with an acidity below 0.8%, you have to comply to very strict conditions for harvesting and processing the olives to get a secure an oil as pure as possible. A virgin oil has been extracted in a natural mechanical process, without any additional products and only using the pulp of the fruit.

When the oil is considered extra virgin, it is pressed at low temperatures (below 30°C) and within the next 24 hours after the harvest. You also have to pass test panel evaluating the organoleptic properties (i.e. taste and smell) to certify that the oil is flawless. Should the olive oil come a certified organic production within the EU then is should also comply with a complex rule set for the cultivation to make certain the oil is even healthier and of higher quality.

There are also strict EU rules on food information, to the end of providing the consumer with as true and correct information as possible. The regulation states what kind of information has to be on the product label or by other means accompany the product, like nutritional information, origin, ingredients, best before date, quality seals and where to put and assure the information is readable.

In the olive oil market there has been, and still is, a lot of deceptive practices to sell poor oils claiming they are quality products. All of the above conditions put together have created a very restricted way in which the highest quality oils can be marketed, leaving nearly only liberty to the field of design and expression of the packaging – where on the other hand, as I could verify at the WOOE 2019 edition, there seems to be no end to imagination and creativity.
